In the end, however, MGM always returned to the classic logo, and that design language persists in the latest redesign. For a brief moment in the 1960s, MGM got rid of the roaring lion altogether, replacing him with a stylized lion graphic. Sometimes, lions would be replaced after the first roar by a Marx brother or Tom, from Tom and Jerry. There have been eight different lions since 1924, and each one was used in multiple iterations of the logo. It's hardly the first time MGM has revamped its logo. In fact, the largest change is the trademark's intro animation, which displays the original logo's slogan in English before slowly zooming out and reverting to the original Latin: art for art's sake. ![]() ![]() The circle that frames him is still made up of a golden ribbon of film, twisted into an elegant wreath and underlined by a drama mask. Leo the lion's CG replacement has the same roar, and looks almost identical to his predecessor. “The two became close, and when Slats died in 1936, Phifer had the body sent to his farm and buried it there, marking the grave with a granite slab and a pine tree to ‘hold down the lion’s spirit,’” Soniak writes.Get the latest tech stories with CNET Daily News every weekday.Īt a glance, the revamped logo is almost identical to the version MGM has been using for the past 64 years. Volney Phifer, who was MGM’s choice animal wrangler, trained Slats. He was born at the Dublin Zoo and had previously appeared in the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation bumper, writes Matt Soniak for Mental Floss: ”Designer Howard Dietz chose the lion as a mascot as a tribute to his alma mater Columbia University and its athletic team, The Lions,” he writes. That’s because Slats made his first appearance pre-sound. With the sang froid that befits movie royalty, Slats just looked around. What better symbol than a lion? But the first MGM lion was actually named Slats, not Leo, and he didn’t roar once in the “ bumper”–the technical term for the little clip that’s like a moving logo for each studio involved with a film. It’s one of the noises most reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood, when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (generally known as MGM) was one of the biggest studios around. Leo the Lion has been the most regular star of MGM Pictures since it was founded on this day in 1924, and his roar is probably the sound most commonly associated with the studio. ![]()
